General Anxiety Disorder Treatment

What is the best general anxiety disorder treatment?

Type of general anxiety disorder treatment that has a lot of success treating this disorder is Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy.

The objectives of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are to identify irrational or maladaptive thoughts, assumptions and beliefs that are related to debilitating negative emotions and to identify how they are dysfunctional, inaccurate, or simply not helpful.

In short the goal is to identify what is wrong and then to fix it. For example, changing maladaptive thinking pattern with positive and productive one would be one goal of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. One of the main aspects of generalized anxiety disorder treatment is to recognize and change irrational and contra productive thoughts with rational and productive thoughts.

The way we think is very important for our well being. The power of thoughts should never be underestimated. This is because the way we think is the way we feel and the way we feel is how we are. Therefore we can say that the way we think is the way we live. For example there are many people that live in fear and have great deal of emotional pain because they thing that they partner is unfaithful.

It is well known fact that optimists are more resilient to physical and mental illnesses than pessimists. Optimists are also more successful and have better and more stable interpersonal relationships as opposed to pessimists. This of course doesn’t mean that optimists never get ill however it does represent and empiric proof of importance and power of thoughts.

One very wise man once said: “If you thing you can, you can; and if you thing you can’t you are right again because you can’t”.

General anxiety disorder is often caused and in almost all cases deepened and prolonged with negative and irrational thoughts. In fact anxiety in general is a disorder of irrational thoughts and because of this it is treated with great success with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Medication for General Anxiety Disorder

General anxiety disorder treatment with only the medication, without psychotherapy, cannot be called a treatment. This is because the sole purpose of medication is to enable the individual to participate in psychotherapy where the real healing process is taking place. Medication alone is almost never a sole answer to anxiety.

Unfortunately there are people whose general anxiety disorder treatment consists only of medication. This is very unfortunate because those people are losing precious time to really help themselves.

Aside from medication there are natural supplements that can be very helpful during the treatment. If an individual suffers from intense symptoms natural supplements should be used to reduce those symptoms of anxiety and depression. If natural supplements don’t work than the medication can be used but only under the professional supervision.

Medication can and should be used in severe cases of anxiety or depression however here are rules how to take them. One of the most important rules is that an individual should be in psychotherapy if taking the medication. Medication can be helpful but only if taken appropriately.

Sadly there are also people whose general anxiety disorder treatment consists of consuming alcohol or abusing legal or illegal drugs. This is understandable but it doesn’t do any good to those people. Alcohol and drugs makes them even more vulnerable and causes more problems that they initially had.

As you can see there are many ways to treat general anxiety disorder however there is only one right way and that is psychotherapy alone or combined with medication. Any other choice would be wrong to make.
